This was a project to make use of leftovers. Three boards from the installation stapled together. Dyed putty, thinned out and layered onto the boards.
The plan was to carve away the layers of gypsum to reveal the colors beneath the surface. The initial tools I tried using took too much time to create the pattern I was hoping to achieve. If the gypsum was only leather hard, I may have had better success. The gypsum had fully cured and I ended up sanding away the layers with better results.
When I was looking through the progress pictures, I liked the vibrant colors of the wet gypsum much more than the pastel finish when dried. That’s when I thought to try an epoxy resin coating, to bring the surface back to life.
This was the first time I’d ever worked with epoxy but it was overall an easy process. I think the end result was something that I could make use of for future work.
This was a happy surprise for the end result to turn out as interesting as it did. It’s nothing complex, but it is fun to look at.
