Soul Searching

Searching
April 04, 2026
The idea of this image and soul searching is different from the normal idea of soul searching, searching within one’s soul. This is soul searching in the sense of projecting yourself, and your soul outwards to find connection, meaning, purpose and more.
The substrate has become more of the creative process. Building up the side walls, forming the bezel, and texturing the surface. The sides were framed with 2″ strips of cut plywood. I used gypsum putty to fill the corner of each side, and scraped it to form the raised edged. I surfaced the base of the board with a thin coating of plain gypsum as well.
I dyed 3 batches of putty, piped them onto baking sheets to dry, and crushing them into powders. The powders were sifted to separate larger pieces from the finer mix. To create the colored and textured surface, I poured a thinner putty mix onto the substrate and followed that with sprinkles of the colored powder. This was done in layers.
I chose the orange/red color for the body. It represents the earthly terracotta clay and the red of flesh and blood. The soul lines are green and purple as they represent colors of the spirit and soul.
