The Sun Will Set

The work for this piece began around June 17th and took over a month to complete. Looking back on the progress, it feels like a much longer time span between assembling the substrate and finally mounting the piece on August 5th. I always maintain a level on anxiety until I can finish my work. That was especially present this time because of how much physical space the piece occupied while I did the line work.
I had no vision while assembling the substrate and doing the base construction. It wasn’t until I decided on the sunset gradient that I knew what this would be. The construction of the substrate presented a few challenges. The joinery is not the best and resulted in surface cracking. The full piece is three separate, inconsistently sized boards, joined to make the larger single surface. The flexing of the substrate was a challenge to work with while getting the surface smoothed. I decided to let some cracking happen. It was inevitable and in a way was fitting for the work. There’s something about the small imperfections that make these pieces a little more interesting to me.
I really appreciate the textures achieved from the spray paint. The cracking and roughness adds to the whole sun setting vibe. Everything about the sun going down, sun damage, the ending of a phase. The little details come together to present the idea of sun setting.
I chose the cool colored lines for this background gradient because of how the color changes in respect to which part of the gradient it’s against. It appears to be in motion, when you see it in the right light.
I was able to display this piece with my other work in the Crystal Loft of the Boho Hair salon. The last picture in the gallery bellow shows this latest piece and the Egret, one of my earlier pieces. It was interesting to see the two, side-by-side, comparing the level of detail I’ve done to the pieces over the months.
