Having Fun
November, 9, 2025
I started this second piece after getting some better piping tips. This larger nib made bold lines that looked great with the size of the board. The thoughts I had when I started were to keep the edge even, to try longer lines and different angles. It’s really interesting for me to see how hard lines mix with the flowing, rounded lines. When I look at the board, the lines take me everywhere and nowhere. Sometimes I see different designs depending on the angle or rotation of the piece. Staring at them to see what is hidden is part of the fun.
I chose to spray paint this piece. I knew I wanted to use green and orange, but I didn’t know what I was going to do until I was beginning the painting. I had a circle stencil near by. I thought to try it on this and see how well it would define the shape. It’s certainly not a clean line, but the circle was good enough. Anything line this in the future would need hand painting touch-ups.
Since finishing this piece, it fell about six feet to the ground. A surprisingly small amount of the lines came off. It was reassuring to see how well the putty bonded to the wood but it did make me thing about the longevity of this work. Transportation, hanging, touch-ups, all things that I’ll need to figure out along the way.
